Lemonfable
Leaf What is Lemonfable?
LemonFable is a 2d side-scroller action RPG that I've been developing for the past year and change. The core idea is "Maplestory without the grind", which means a game that looks and sounds similar to Maplestory, but doesn't have the staleness and repetition of an MMO. Create your unqiue critter, dress them up, explore, and fight cutesy enemies! The game combines a robust and fun action system with the cozy feeling of games like early Maplestory and Stardew Valley. The player is free to explore the world and face dangerous challenges at their own pace, without a big overwhelming to-do list like some RPGs have.

Leaf The World
LemonFable takes place on the continent of Annwn, which has become detached from the rest of the world, held in stasis for many years. Many years ago, a war broke out that ravaged the land and destroyed most of civilization on the continent. The Gwydd - large sentient and godlike trees whose voices can be heard by their followers - have taken over the ruins of the ravaged Critter society. Evil sentient fruit, dolls, spirits, and zealous Gwydd followers now roam the land. The only remaining Critter settlement is on the floating isle of Aelwyd, where all the survivors of the war reside. Despite the dangers of Annwn's surface and the frequent disappearances of their loved ones, the survivors can't bring themselves to leave. Due to an unknown powerful magic, they don't age, and seem unable to hate or retaliate against the Gwydd. The player will explore the dreamlike, pristine, hostile ruins of Annwn - a large continent of diverse biomes - as they learn about the destruction of the Critter civilization, and the divine charm that has bewitched its survivors.

Leaf Weapon Classes
The game includes a leveling system and skill tree that depends on which weapon you're using, each one being it's own functional class. The weapons are physical manifestations of angelic beings, who have their own motives. They can guide or obstruct the player throughout your travels. Additionally, each combination of weapons works symbiotically, and provides a unique set of perks. Weapons include:

The Sword - Themis
Themis is the perfect tool for the aspiring knight. She is a level-headed, reasonable Angel. She strikes foes at a steady pace, dealing a calculated amount of damage. She can block or parry when needed, dodge from tricky situations, or strike with deadly precision when the moment is right.

The Scythe - Nyx
Nyx is the perfect tool for a cold, calculating battlemage. She will do whatever it takes for her goals to see fruition. She strikes with physical and ranged attacks at a moderate pace. She can sap the health of enemies with magic, or inflict bleed over time to ensure that no victim escapes.

The Dagger - Eris
Eris works well with a cunning, but chaotic assassin. She is devious and deceptive. She strikes fast, using poison and positioning to bolster her damage. She can sneak to get the first blow, throw smoke bombs to increase her chance of a critical hit, inflict damage over time, or strike from afar with ranged dagger attacks.

The Gunbow - Diana
Diana is the perfect weapon for a passionate hunter. She is single-minded and stubborn, but very confident. She strikes fast, with ranged attacks. She can target enemies to deal more damage to them, fire a barrage of arrows, and use the momentum of her attacks to propel herself through the air. She alternates between fast, short-ranged bullets and high impact, long range arrows.

The Book - Hecate
Hecate is the perfect tool for a magician who would sooner be safe than sorry. She is cryptic and wise to the ancient ways. She deals high damage at a moderate pace. She can protect the user with her magic shield, set enemies on fire for damage over time, teleport the player, and deal massive destruction with elemental powers.

The Hammer - Eos
Eos is the perfect weapon for a bright, reverent warrior. She is bubbly and outgoing, jumping into things headfirst without a second thought. She strikes slowly, dealing enormous damage. She can block to regenerate her charge, and pull enemies toward her to execute her large multi-hit attacks.

The Greatsword - Keres
Keres' whereabouts are unknown. It is rumored that it is made of many angels, and extremely powerful, but deals damage to its user. It is to be treated with extreme caution if ever found.

Leaf Goals
The current release date of LemonFable is currently unkown. It's been in progress for over a year, and many of the core systems are in place - e.g. physics, movement, combat, leveling system, character creation, inventory, UI. I'm looking to complete a demo and have it on steam before 2027. This would include the hub (which has shops, a house for the player, NPCs, etc), tutorial area, and first full biome (Tyr Llygoeden - the farmlands). This vertical slice would give a good idea for what the game will feel like - such as the art and sound style, combat, movement, and core gameplay loop.

The eventual goal for LemonFable is to have:
-At least 7 playable classes with 6 button movesets dependent on movement, positioning, and comboing (this is mostly done at the time of writing)
-A beautiful, interactable hub with NPCs that have relationships to the player dependent on how many quests the player has done for them
-A cute leveling system that requires the player to go to the hub and interact with NPCs in different buildings (e.g. the Cafe, the Gym, etc)
-A world that can be approached a number of different ways, with secret skips and portals leading to different parts of each biome. It should feel fun to explore
-9 different biomes, each with a main boss (Gwydd) and a mini boss (Champion), whose outcome affects the karma and NPC perception of the player
-A game that can be replayed, as the difficulty grows and new skills and builds become available to the player
-A compelling, even if minimalist or vague, story that feels interesting to learn about

Thank you for looking <3
